Our Wedding (19)
July 14th 2007, Mandy Kirby and Steve West tied the knot at home in Mooloolaba. The couple were originally together when 16 and 18 and some 26 years later fate would have it, that they should come together once more, for good. Chris Maynard acted as the 'Best Man' and 'Amanda Ozolins' the 'Maid of Honor', Sue Sheard did an amazing job as photographer. It was a very casual affair with an 11.30am ceremony followed at 2.30 by an onslaught of hungry, thirsty paddlers who ate their way through an entire lamb, several slabs of pork and a truck load of beer and beverages. -
ManaV6 Fiji. Herb Kane's 'Takia' gets a make-over. (10)
The Mana V.6 - SPG 07 Edition was put through trials on Saturday 12 May, 2007. The original hull (Takia V.6) was designed by artist-historian and author, Herb Kawainui Kane (elected Living Treasure of Hawaii, 1984) who based the design on his research into traditional Fijian & South Pacific canoe design. The Takia V.6 was used for the 1998 World Sprints and 2003 South Pacific Games hosted in Suva. When the 2007 South Pacific Games Organising Committee chose this canoe for Samoa, the opportunity was taken to update the design to improve it's open ocean racing capabilities and the Mana V.6 was born. Improvements include: - Raised gunnels and increased freeboard - new higher foredeck with increased buoyancy - moulded fibreglass seats with rear drop for added stiffness - raised Tahitian style Iako attachment points for safer open water changeovers - cockpit deck sections between seats 2 & 3 and 4 & 5 provide additional longitudinal stiffness - new Ama design also with increased buoyancy and longer waterline length - revised seat positions to greatly improve weight distribution - raked "portafino" stern to improve surfing. From the short 3 hour test on Saturday, the most noticeable improvement is the stiffness and responsiveness of the canoe. COLIN PHILP. -

Aussie Women 2003 Va`ahine Race Tahiti (16)
In 2003, a crew composed predominenty of Aussie women travelled to Tahiti and the island of Raitea to participate in the women's leg of the Hawaiki Nui Va`a race, a 42km change race which leaves and returns from the island of Raitea. The Hawaiki Nui Va`a mens event is a 3 day race between the islands of Huahine, Raitea, Tahaa and Bora Bora. The women race after the mens 1st leg from Huahine to Raitea. I had been visiting Tahiti once or twice a year since 1997 and my partner with years of travel agency experience, arranged many of the logistics for the crew. Brad Kane from Outrigger Australia, Robyn Singh, Jane Hall, Nancy Esse and Win TVs Benny Pike were just some of the travellers, revellers and paddlers who made up the KANUchic team. This collection of images, is less about paddling and more to do with kinship and the beauty to be found in this truely inspiring island paradise. -
Retro Hamilton Cup (17)
In 2003 I set about compiling a 20 year history of the Hamilton Cup. With assistance from Chris Maynard, Billy Danford and others, the result was over 35 pages of images and text covering the beginnings of outrigger canoe paddlings introduction into Australia in 1978 up to the first ever Hamilton Island race, billed 'The Queensland Outrigger Titles' in which Walter Guild and Hank Lass attended. In 1984 the first official Hamilton Cup race was run. These are just a few of the images. Photos courtesy of Hamilton Island Resort unless stated otherwise. -
Jaws (17)
In November of 2002, I was on the island of Maui to photograph Brian Mulvaney's wedding. As it turned out, the swells rolled in and we rolled out for a photo session at the infamous 'Jaws' break. This was the first day of a building swell; no tow-in surfers had arrived. Over the next few days the wave face grew to some 50'; we are there at the modest end of the scale, maybe at 20'. I had paddled with Rick Nu`u in the Ouvéa to Poindemie race [New Caledonia] with Team NZ and knew of his physical prowess. Living on Maui he had moved from NZ, and was working on carving out a life for himself with partner, Canadian paddler Zoe. A Kai Bartlett 'Arcturus' was used by Rick; a demo which was left with Hawaiian Canoe Club back at Kahuli. Leaving from 'Maliko Gulch' we launched Brian's Boston Whaler, with the Arcturus and Surfski mounted on overhead racks. More than just the result of pressing a button to get an image, the resultant images required many logistical road blocks being overcome, together with the knowledge and experience of those involved.
